Disappointment

What a disappointment. As I said, yesterday we had the fish pie that was in the freezer. It was a readymade pie we’d bought in Morrison’s. It was one of their “best” range. I suspect we bought it chilled but it could be frozen at home, which we had done.

The Fox put it in our top oven - we have two – at the recommended temperature.  Soon we heard a crackling noise. The Fox looked in the oven. The top of the pie was already blackening. He turned down the temperature. A few minutes later we could smell burning. We moved the pie to the other oven at an even lower temperature & just hoped all would be cooked. After all we thought a certain amount of cooking must have been done when making the sauce & mash. Fish usually cooks quickly.

At least it didn’t look any blacker by the time we served the pie.  I dug in. The first forkful had a prawn on it. Yippee, I thought. It was so tough & chewy, massively over cooked. As we ate on we both of us came to the same conclusion. All the fish, the salmon, the smoked haddock & the prawns, all were overcooked, tough & chewy. We managed to eat it all but it wasn’t a pleasant experience. The only saving grace of the meal was the delicious bottle of Loire sauvignon blanc. It carried the symbols of the abbey of Fontevraud, which we visited long ago & still retain fond memories of. The wine we’ll buy again, the pie never again. If we ever get rid of this virus we may even go to the Fontevraud & its abbey again.
