Pastry & compost

The problem with using ready rolled frozen pastry arises when you only want to use some of the pastry. As we usually only cook for 2 we rarely need a whole roll of frozen pastry. Today, for example, the Fox is going to make a Salmon Vol-au-Vent for dinner. He is making one vol-au-vent which requires only a quarter of the piece of ready rolled pastry. At present the whole roll is out, thawing gently, so I can carefully unroll the pastry to cut off the quarter. The rest will then go back in the freezer for another day, probably next week.

Meanwhile our gardener has arrived. She’s decided to have a go at emptying the compost bin to nourish our flower beds, especially around the apple tree & roses. So far she’s discovered the string used across the top & bottom of potato sacks clearly must contain plastic as it isn’t rotting down at all. I usually use the paper of the potato sacks to peel my veg on & then put the lot in the compost bin. Clearly in future I will have to throw out the string ends of the bag. She’s also found an avocado plant, where the discarded stone is sprouting a root. That she’s taking home to grow on. I wonder what else she will find as she rummages through the pile.
