Still hot

The heat continues on.

The worst of it is that in our homes we’re not geared up for such weather. Our houses ae designed to retain heat through cold winters, not let out in blazing summers. We don’t have air-conditioning, just windows that open, so letting in hot air from outside. We’re dropping the blinds to darken any rooms when the sun is pouring in in the hope of making it a bit cooler.

Even our gardens are planted with water-loving plants & green, now going brown, lawns. It isn’t worth planting other plants as our usual problem is of plants dying in frosts in winter or drowning in our regular deluges. It seems ironic that in our garden we’ve got two trees dying. One is a holm oak from too much water last winter, the other a magnolia from too much wind (Hector) & too little water this summer.

It’s the longest hot dry spell I can remember since 1976. That’s over 40 years ago! And to think it’s still early in summer. We’ve only just entered the month of July! Summer’s got a long way to go yet. I’m expecting a hosepipe ban any day. We Brits are profligate with our water usage with the result for all the flooding in winter, now our water supplies are going down. It isn’t helped with news of two moor fires blazing into one. The moors have loads of peat which dried out, as it has been by the weather, is acting as fuel for the fires. Water is going to putting the fires out rather than for drinking etc.

On the good side the Fox is eating better. Over the weekend he has been eating more like normal. Portions are a bit small but more than the couple of mouthfuls they have been of late.

Today we’re back to salad after a few days of hot food. I’m using up the sliced corned beef & some thinly sliced ham.
