Yesterday we went
along to the golf club, after stopping on the way to buy some cod. We expected
to bump into our cruising friends. We often meet up on a Tuesday afternoon. However
the club was virtually empty.
Apparently the
barmaid had told our friends on Sunday that Tuesday was going to be very busy
as there was a popular golf competition due. That’s probably why our friends
never arrived.
So why was it so
quiet when we got there? It has rained so much of late the course had to be
closed in the morning. Needless to say the competition was cancelled. By the
afternoon the course had reopened but there were very few players around.
Clearly all had been put off by the uncertainty of whether the course would
open again as the day went on.
It has to be
admitted we do seem to have had a lot of rain. When we went away we had
intended to stop at a garden centre on the way home to buy some plants.
However, it was just so wet we didn’t see any point in stopping. We just wanted
to be home in the dry. I think it has rained at some point every day since we’ve
been home again.
As we looked across
the course we couldn’t help thinking how autumnal everything looked. The leaves
on the trees are looking dead. They’ve not quite changed to the golds of autumn
but they’re not far off. Even the grass is beginning to look as though it’s
preparing to go to sleep for the winter ahead. It all seems so early in the
season. I wonder if it’s a sign of a harsh winter to come.
