Dark shadow on the land

So Ian Brady has finally died. It had to happen. His partner in crime, Myra Hindley, died in 2002.

As someone who grew up in greater Manchester at the time of the Moors murders (1963-5), the murders had impact. Although I was too young to really be aware of the details of the murders I was aware of the mood of perturbation, menace & horror that was felt in the city.

It is strange, as we went to & from Wakefield in 2015, we passed Saddleworth Moor. I couldn’t help commenting that for a whole generation of people the very name of the moor sent a shudder down one’s spine. That particular day it was gloomy, making the moor seem even more sinister.

Those two people spent a long time in prison & rightly so. I just wish that by the time of their deaths they had released the last family, the Bennetts, from the misery of not knowing where the body of Keith Bennett lay so they could give him an appropriate burial & gain a peace of mind for themselves. His is the only body unrevealed. It seems unlikely Ian Brady will have left such information behind.
