Getting into Christmas spirit?

The houses are once more lit. Santas, snowmen & reindeer roam. Christmas trees twinkle. We’re now trying to get into festive mood. It is hard when you still see mobile generators, labelled Electricity NW, all around & you see the rain still coming down. We all still half-fear the power will go out once more.

Our friend who has a market stall went off to the Lancaster market on Saturday & the Morecambe one on Sunday. Hardly a soul appeared. The crowds doing last minute shopping seem to have evaporated. It should be the busiest time of year for him, but people are still so busy recovering from the flood damage & power loss that they are just not getting out to shop. The whole Christmas momentum has been lost. It’s difficult to believe the big day is next week. There’s very little sense of jollity around Morecambe this year.

Still I have at least got all the cards done – with no radio or TV to distract me it was something to do while we had no power. I’ve even distributed most of them. Linda, our home help, popped along the road on Tuesday, delivering cards as she went. I think I’ve just got half a dozen left & those are to people I expect to see on Friday.

Earlier in the week we got the food – we’re having a gammon joint as we did last year. Today we’re off to sort out the library so we’ll have plenty to read for the holiday. Next job will be to get the tree up & then we’re done. Maybe then I’ll relax enough to feel more celebratory. Or maybe not.
