Our own microclimate

We decided to pop over to the golf club yesterday afternoon. We were surprised to see the snow once more on the fells across the water of Morecambe Bay.

We have been along the promenade a few times this week, but it has always been hazy, misty even, so only the nearest fells, if any, were visible. Yesterday was a day of blue skies & startling clarity. There was no denying the white caps on some of the higher fells. It’s certainly been raining enough & been cold enough lately. On Tuesday we kept being pelted with hailstones. Clearly, across the way, the rain fell as snow.

It sometimes strikes us how lucky we are here. Morecambe has its own microclimate. My home help, Linda lives in Lancaster & is amazed how different the weather is despite being only a few miles away. Lancaster can have settled snow while we barely even see a scattering of flakes. We do, however, get the winds. Linda is Lancaster born & bred. Previously Morecambe has always been a place to go out for a treat on a sunny day. Now, working here, she’s discovered how much the weather changes with the tides. As for the winds! She can’t believe they can be so strong. But then there is very little to break the force as the wind hurtles up the estuary. In Arnside, further up the estuary, where we used to live, you literally walked along the prom with your plastic bag of light shopping horizontal to you as you battled the gusts.
