We went along to the
golf club & travelled the world.
We were intending to
go along to the village pub but discovered the roads were still closed after
Wednesday night’s storms. Heaven knows what happened there. No-one we’ve asked
has any idea.
So we decided to go
along to the golf club. There we discovered Eric & Doreen. They were
chatting to Brian, someone we didn’t know. They were pleased to see us &
eager for us to join them which we duly did.
During the course of
our conversation we travelled the world. Reminiscences abounded.
Eric & Doreen are
enthusiastic cruisers. In the 70s they had lived in Nigeria. While there they
had visited other parts of Africa including Mombasa in Kenya, a city they recalled reminiscing about with Mrs B, our friend the retired headmistress. Later
we discovered they had gone on to live in Maastricht in the Netherlands. They’ve
holidayed in Canada & USA. Brian, too, had worked in the Netherlands, as
well as in Ireland. I reminisced about Norway, a place I visited when my father
was working there. We also remembered French, Dutch, Italian & Canadian
holidays.
We had all found the
local people, wherever they were, welcoming & generous. I can’t help
concluding the reception you get is largely the result of the attitude you take
with you. The one family I know who were robbed on holiday in France, were also
the one family I know who went suspicious of the French. They’d only gone to
France as the then young children wanted to visit EuroDisney.
We came back home
after our brief holiday globetrotting to our very English Little Bacon Flans,
suitably refreshed from our journey.
