Further travels

We continued our travels with yesterday’s dinner. This time it was not the wine that sent us on our way nor was it to Italy. This time it was the meal itself – Smoked Haddock & Egg Mornay, smoked haddock topped with a poached egg, covered with cheese sauce & quickly browned under the grill.

This took us off to a far distant time – 1993. Then we went off to Edinburgh with a dear friend for a few days. It was the first time I used a wheelchair – a borrowed one from the Red Cross for the trip.

That day we dined at the Royal Mile Tavern on the Royal Mile. The meal was served especially for us downstairs – they usually only did food upstairs but since it was clearly impossible for me to get upstairs they cleared a table downstairs to serve us. The meal was smoked haddock & I think poached egg & cheese sauce – delicious as was yesterday’s effort.

It brought back good memories of the holiday. It also struck us that it is time we went to Edinburgh again – we’ve not been since. So much must have changed, what with the coming of a Scottish parliament & the dreadful fire in Grassmarket, not to mention the passing of so many years. Is St Giles’ church, named after the patron saint of cripples, now more accessible to wheelchairs? I wonder.

It also made us think of that good friend, now married, & wonder how they are coping with self-isolation & the threat of coronavirus.
