Covid arrives

An ambulance arrives. I watch anxiously. Eventually a neighbour is brought out on a chair, carrying something cylindrical on his lap. He has no mask on. He looks fairly alert. He’s driven off.

Later on we discover that he has Covid-19. It’s a hazard of his job. He’s a bus driver. During the first shutdown he’d been furloughed. Most buses weren’t running. This time bus schedules remain the same so he’s been working throughout & now he’s caught the virus.

As we were food shopping yesterday, I rang his wife to see if she needed anything from the shops. A small bottle of milk, that was all. We duly got it. It seems our neighbour not only has the virus but also double pneumonia. He’s now on oxygen & will be in hospital for the foreseeable future. Meanwhile she is self-isolating. She’s flung open as many doors & windows as she can to encourage the germs to depart the house. She’s been tested for the virus though at this point she is feeling well. She works for the NHS & so is keen to get back to work during this crisis.

The pair have been such supportive neighbours over the years they’ve been here. It seems a pity for them to be hit this way. Our thoughts are with them both. We just hope he can be home soon without any long-term consequences.
