Notre Dame

Notre Dame with the red glow of a sunset

It was with horror the Fox & I watched Notre Dame burning in Paris. The Fox has never been inside. I last went in 1969, a long time ago. Yet we both feel an emotional attachment to the place. The last time we stayed in Paris we did intend to visit. However, we took one look at the long queues of tourists outside & decided the exterior was sufficient for us.

It was with some relief yesterday when we realised the cathedral had at least some parts standing, including the magnificent rose windows.

I didn’t feel the same horror when York had its fire. I was perturbed by the fire at Windsor Castle, but again not on the same scale. It’s strange.

We’re even contemplating making a donation to the repair of Notre Dame, such is our feeling towards the building. We’re certainly tempted by the idea of another holiday in Paris to see for ourselves just how bad it is & show some solidarity with the people of Paris & France. The only thing that is putting us off is the unrest & riots that have been going on for weeks in Paris. As a couple of doddery silvery haired people, one in a wheelchair, we no longer feel we could dodge trouble if we came into it as we would have done once when we were young & fit.

Notre Dame in happier times
