Yesterday we went
along the prom to the golf club. It was heaving. I don’t think I’ve seen so
many tourists in Morecambe since the 1970-80s. Still more were pouring in. We
gathered from friends we joined at the club, the motorway from the south was at
a standstill from Junction 28. That’s halfway down to Manchester!
It was slow-going on
the prom. There are so many zebra & pelican crossings all of them with a
steady stream of people crossing from the shops & hotels to the beach side
of the road. As for the beach, from what I could see from the car, there were
just inches between people stretched out on the sands. We’ve come to the
conclusion that this year the prom should be avoided, on sunny days at least. In
future we’re going on the back streets that only the locals know.
So why so busy now? Undoubtedly
it is partly the weather. Even I decided yesterday was a day to bare my legs
& strip off one of my many layers. A warm sunny day is almost guaranteed to
bring out the day-trippers.
But this year there
are other attractions. Last year was remarkably hot & sunny, so many are
questioning whether they need to go abroad for a bit of sun. And if money is
tight they can more easily have a shorter stay here than they would if they
were flying overseas.
During the winter
months, a TV series, “The Bay”, was filmed in Morecambe. Now that series is
being aired. We haven’t watched it, but from what people have said, although
they weren’t always excited by the storyline, all were impressed by the
magnificent scenery in which it is sent. Maybe some people have been reminded
just what a beautiful place Morecambe Bay is & decided to come visit it.
I suspect, too, a
lot of people are nervous of booking abroad with all this Brexit business. We’ve
certainly been inundated with holiday brochures almost pleading with us to book
a holiday with them. I know we’ve certainly questioned visiting Europe. We’re
concerned about with our EHIC (health insurance) cards, even our passports,
will be valid if we ever get out of Europe. Staying in the UK you have no such
worries.
Whatever the reason,
Morecambe is certainly heaving.
