The sun is shining
today. Angie isn’t coming. We’ve changed her usual day to Thursday. In many
ways that is more convenient for both of us.
The sunshine does
remind me of one glorious sunny day when we ventured over to Riva del Garda, a
small town at the north end of Lake Garda. My
mind my also be wandering there as I see a calendar on the desk featuring its marina.
Riva del Garda |
It was on our
second trip. The first one we did early in our holiday, our first main
expedition from the hotel in Molveno. It was at a time we were still feeling
weary from our long trip to get to the hotel. As we drove along we got waylaid
by a particularly pleasing beauty spot.
Having stopped to take some snaps we
ended up sitting on the bench looking down across the town of Riva to the deep blue of the lake beyond. By
the time we got to Riva itself we were really feeling too tired to cope with
the task of finding a parking spot, especially when we had to try to cope with
a one way system. Instead we headed back to the hotel and an afternoon nap.

Our second trip was
at the end of the holiday, & a lot more successful. We went the fastest
route to Riva so we wouldn’t be sidetracked. The parking spot magically
appeared before our eyes. We had a very pleasant hour or two, strolling around
the harbour, looking at the numerous shops, just pottering, enjoying the sun
and magnificent views of the lake and the surrounding hills, watching the
yachts sailing on the lake.

The north end of Lake Garda is a lot more hilly. The south end is much
flatter, though it does sound as though it has some historically interesting
things to see.
We came to the conclusion
that Garda was a lake worthy of a longer explore. It would be easy to base
yourself somewhere like Riva and use the numerous ferries to go from one
lakeside village/town to anther. On some of the ferries you could even take a
car if you wanted. We’ve promised ourselves to do it one day. Maybe even
explore some of the other lakes, Como,
Maggiore, for example. It strikes us, rather like here in the English Lake
District, each lake seems to have its own character, its own personality, each
worthy of an explore in its own right. One day….. but not this year…. we’ll be
back
